I've gone through the Indians' 40-man roster, and as we sit here today — you are sitting, aren't you? — there are only seven players who you can say with absolute certainty will be on the Indians' opening-day roster next year: Asdrubal Cabrera, Shin-Soo Choo, Travis Hafner, Jhonny Peralta, Grady Sizemore, Fausto Carmona and Kerry Wood.
That's a remarkably low figure if you think about it.
If the Indians had their way, they'd only have six, because they would love to trade Wood. A $10 million closer on a bad team is about as bad as it gets in the area of resource management.

One of the nice things about this time of year in the Independent Baseball-writing business is we sometimes can sit back without the daily buzz of games and think about some of the factors -- and the people -- that make this business go.
I have written from time to time about some of the league commissioners and certain owners when something special was happening, perhaps giving credit if someone had stepped in and saved a franchise or maybe even a full league or earned a certain honor.

Shelley Duncan was outrighted to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but that doesn't mean he'll end up there.
The first time a player clears waivers and is sent outright to the minor leagues, he has no choice but to accept the assignment.
The second time, he has the right to refuse the assignment.
I might clear on Monday or something, and if do, then I’ll become a free agent. -Shelley Duncan

I don't mean to be blunt, but no one was more deserving of this year's NL Cy Young than Tim Lincecum.
It isn't simply because he smoked 96-mph fastballs past batters for a season-high 261 strikeouts.
He was a catalyst for the Giants and lit-up a team that made its first push for the playoffs since 2003.
